Will Smith has officially confirmed that he’ll be returning to reprise his original I Am Legend role in the long-awaited sequel, alongside Michael B. Jordan who he says is fully on board.
The first instalment was released back in 2007 and featured two completely different endings, as Smith’s character died in the theatrical version but survived in an alternative ending on DVD.

Despite the confusing ending differences, Smith has confirmed that I Am Legend 2 will be continuing off from the DVD’s twist of an ending, not the theatrical version.

While speaking at an in-conversation session at Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, the I, Robot star revealed that he has a “call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow” to discuss plans for the sequel.
“I have a call with Michael B. Jordan tomorrow,” he said.”
He continued: “The script just came in… I’m probably giving away too much information.”

As aforementioned, Smith also confirmed that his I Am Legend character will return for the sequel, despite dying in the first instalment’s theatrical version.
“We’re going with the mythology of the DVD version where my character lived,” Smith said.
“I can’t tell you any more but Michael B. Jordan is in and we’re doing it.”

Smith says that the plot details for I Am Legend 2 are currently being kept under wraps, however, it may be safe to assume what it could entail when considering the ending of the DVD version.
Details of the sequel have been teased in the past, such as confirmation that the sequel will take place decades after the events of the first movie – presumably up to two decades seeing that Smith is now almost 20 years older than before.
However, Smith could potentially be aged up a bit for storyline purposes.

I Am Legend’s ending saw Smith’s character realising that the infected zombie-like antagonists aren’t all brutal killers as he once believed.
Smith’s Robert Neville also discovers a cure for the infected during the ending moments of the first movie and is shown taking the cure to a new location of survivors with characters Anna and Ethan alongside him.
Considering that the sequel is set decades after, it’s safe to assume that Neville’s cure wasn’t an instant fix to the post-apocalyptic world – but maybe one day.
I Am Legend 2 does not yet have a release date.
